The Tree of Life Sporran

$210.00$235.00

Our Tree of Life Sporran is made from black leather and has been outfitted with our intricate Yggdrasil Interchangeable Flap, which captures the verdant and collective mytheme of the “Tree of Life.”

Based on original artwork by Celtic artist Neil Dring (see his other works here), the roots of our tree spring from the knotted border that encloses it, uniting the terrestrial with the heavenly in the vein of the Yggdrasil myth. Perched within the branches of the tree is a hidden face. Numerous living creatures are associated with the World Tree, but we elected to give this honor to Hræsvelgr, a corpse-eating giant who assumes the form of an eagle that lives within Yggdrasil’s uppermost branches, seated at the edge of Heaven.

Made from hand-selected top grain vegetable tanned leather, the Interchangeable Sporran Flap comes in various finishes including Classic, Chocolate, and Bronze, and has been distressed to give it an Old World feel. The color may vary slightly due to the nature of the hand-rubbed stain.

Sporran cords are accented with a variety of metal beads. Bead style may vary on each bag.

The color of the flap may vary slightly due to the nature of the hand-rubbed stain.

Description

About the Tree of Life:
One of the more fascinating shared elements between the differing belief systems and creation myths of the world is that of the Tree of Life. The Tree takes forms both humble and sublime: it is a shrub, a woody vine, a cross, and a towering Yew. Depending on the culture, it may yield Truth, Knowledge, Life, Death, Love, or even fruit with the power to grant immortality. In the Norse tradition, Yggdrasil was not only a figurative representation of the power of life, it was also a massive Ash tree that united every facet of creation. The 9 worlds of Norse cosmology were knit together by Yggdrasil, and the life-affirming aspect of trees was honored further by Vikings, who held their Things (assemblies) beneath the branches of “warden trees” that dominated the landscape.

About Our Sporrans:
Like all of our products, our sporran is made by hand in our workshop right here in the USA. We hand-select the beads on our leather drawstring cords to complement the bag, though bead colors may vary depending on what we have in stock.
This is the largest capacity sporran that we offer. It can easily accommodate a phone, wallet, keys, and more.

All of our themed sporrans come with an interchangeable flap that can be switched out for any other flap on our site, providing your bag with more versatility!

Functionality:
The bag utilizes a leather drawstring cord to close the bag at the top. The second leather cord is used to loop over the concho or clasp on the flap to hold it closed. The back of the sporran is reinforced at the top with vegetable-tanned leather. The flap attaches to the back of the bag at the top with heavy-duty snaps. There are two D-rings to attach the sporran to a belt. The loop will comfortably fit on a 2.5-inch belt should you choose to wear it that way.

Dimensions:
Flap only – 4.5 in W x 6 in L
Rob Roy Style Sporran Pouch only – 8.5 in W x 9 in H*
*By design, our sporran includes quite a few folds in the leather and is expandable beyond these dimensions.
