The Ægishjálmur I: Helm of Awe Sporran Flap

$70.00$95.00

Our Helm of Awe Sporran Flap is embossed with our Ægishjálmur design, inspired by the magical staves used as talismans by ancient Viking cultures, the original illustration pulled from the pages of a 17th-century Icelandic grimoire. Our Ægishjálmur I is presented in stark simplicity with deep, powerful lines as part of our Norse Magical Stave series.

Made from hand-selected top-grain vegetable-tanned leather, the Interchangeable Sporran Flap comes in various finishes including Classic, Chocolate, and Bronze, and has been distressed to give it an Old World feel. The color may vary slightly due to the nature of the hand-rubbed stain.

Description

About the Ægishjálmur (Helm of Awe):
Presented in stark simplicity and deep, powerful lines, Celtic Leatherworks offers this classic Ægishjálmur in our Norse Magical Stave series. Ritualistic in nature, Magical Staves were used by men and women in Viking cultures for a variety of purposes. Some served as general protective icons, intended as a form of visual prayer. Others were more specialized in intent and function and covered topics from the extraordinary (to make oneself invisible) to the mundane (favorable weather for fishing).

Though the Ægishjálmur ur was first mentioned in the Poetic Eddas, no extant contemporary example has been identified. However, the tradition of the Helm of Awe remained a key feature of Norse culture for centuries.

Functionality:
To attach a sporran flap to one of our leather sporrans, fasten the flap to the back top of the bag by way of the heavy-duty snaps. Fasten the flap closed by using the leather cord to loop over the concho or clasp on the flap.
