Leather shields like this one were carried by Highland warriors for personal defense. The foreground of this targe features a magnificent cross embedded with knotwork. In the quadrants surrounding the cross are the Henderson clan crest in the upper left, and the shield elements from the Henderson coat of arms in the bottom right. It is 19 inches in diameter and constructed with a 3/4 inch plywood core. The tooled Celtic designs on the front are accented by the hand hammered etched brass boss in the center and 7 inch removable brass shield spike.
